Tabl – Tawil – Rumba Masri

Rhythms Tabl, Tawil and Rumba Masri

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Arabic rhythms tutorial. Today we are going to learn three different rhythms, which are all 4/4 rhythms.

The first one is called Tabl. Tabl gets its name from the instrument that generally plays it. The tabl is a big, percussion instrument, commonly used in Dabke. This rhythm is folkloric.

It begins with a silence, but this silence is usually filled in with some TACs. You will hear it as:

DUM - TAC - DUM - TAC

Our second rhythm is called Tawil. In Arabic, the word Tawil means long. This rhythm begins with a DUM and is followed by a combination of TACs. This combination can slightly change depending on the song or musicians.

You will hear the Tawil rhythm as:

DUM-TACA-TACA-TAC-TACA-TACA-TACA

The last rhythm we will learn today is called Rumba Masri. Masri means Egyptian in Arabic. This rhythm begins and ends with a DUM and can be heard in different ways, but the most common one is:

DUM-TACA-TACA-DUM

Below, I will leave three videos so you can listen to these rhythms and  have a better understanding of them.

Thank you for reading and keep moving towards your dreams!
